Photography Tutorial: Festive photography

You have bought the presents and organised the meals, but have you planned your pictures? Here are a few ideas to help you make the most of your festive photography.

Party time
Digital cameras are perfect for parties. The Digital IXUS models are small enough to hang around your neck on a strap, ready for instant use, and the built-in flash means you can shoot anywhere, any time.

With most Canon compact cameras the flash fires automatically when the light level is too low for pictures by the existing light. If you don’t want the flash to fire in low light you need to set the ‘Flash Off’ mode on the camera.

Shooting with flash is easy. First set a suitable shooting mode – ‘Auto’ is good.

Now point the camera at the subject and press the shutter button. The camera will set the shutter speed and aperture for you and do all the flash calculations needed to produce a well-exposed picture. An alternative with EOS cameras and some PowerShots and Digital IXUS models is to use the Slow Sync option – this will add an ambience to the photo. Check your User Manual for instructions.
